Types Of Hair Loss

Circular hair loss is the formation of one or several hairless spots (scars), mostly without clinical signs of infection. Defining characteristics are so called "exclamation mark hairs" and "comma hairs": short broken hairs that become thinner towards the scalp, as well as changes of the nails(small dimples or transverse/crosswise grooves. In rare cases a complete loss of the nail occurs). This not only has diagnostical value, but can also indicate the severity of the disease. In circular hair loss it can often be observed that only pigmented hairs fall out, while white hairs are usually spared and the hair becomes white in tufts(poliosis). The causes of circular hair loss are unknown, therefore a therapy geared towards treating the causes is still unavailable. The cosmetic consequences often lead to psychosocial problems, but no further health risks exists.

The structural defects of the hair shaft are usually a genetically (pre)disposed. They lead to increased brittleness of the hair and, as a result, to very short hair (usually only a few cm), which may seem sparse. The diagnosis can be determined by microscopical examination. A therapy for hair shaft anomalies is not available. Preventively, strong combing of the hair should be avoided. Hair conditioner can diminish the tendency of hair breakage.

Scarring hair loss includes all types of diseases that lead to the destruction of the hair root, and as a result, to irreversible hair loss. This can be caused by burning or ionising rays. However, the most frequent cause is an infections by bacteria or fungi.

Diffuse hair loss - This type of hair loss is due to various different factors.
